How to Get To Pranamar:

You will be flying into San Jose (Juan Santamaría International Airport). From there, you have 2 options.

Option 1: Take a smaller plane: (This is what Christy is doing*)

“There are 2 domestic airlines in the country: Nature Air and Sansa. Both airlines fly from/to San Jose International Airport (SJO) to Tambor Airport (TMU) . You can check their schedules and book your tickets online. If their schedule does not fit your itinerary, another very good option is to charter a plane, which becomes monetarily convenient also when it is 4+ people. A private charter has more luggage allowance than the 30 pounds that are allowed per person by the local domestic airlines.

Flying to Tambor takes only 25 minutes. From Tambor, we can arrange a taxi for you, or we can have a car rental meet you and do the drive yourself. From Tambor it is a 50 minute drive to Pranamar.”*

*When purchasing your tickets I recommend taking an early flight to San Jose, allowing at least an hour to go through customs before your short flight to Tambor, and then taking a taxi to Pranamar. You will need to book both flights ahead. I am flying Sansa which is about $114 and seems to have more time options available. I purchased my round trip ticket from Newark to San Jose through Expedia for around $480.

Option 2: Take a ferry:

“The drive from San Jose will take from 4 to 5 hours. You first must drive to Puntarenas, which is where you will have to take a ferry. That drive is about 1- 1.5 hours from San Jose. The best thing to do is to ask your car rental company for the best way to get to Puntarenas, depending on where you are located in San Jose. Take the ferry that leaves from Puntarenas port to Paquera port. The ferry is called “Ferry Tambor,” but it does not go to Tambor; it is just called by that name because the ferry company is owned by a huge beach resort located in Tambor beach.

Check the ferry schedule at Naviera Tambor. The ferry crossing takes about 1 hour and is very scenic, plus a good opportunity to stretch and rest from the drive.

Once you get to Paquera all you have to do is follow the other cars, and follow the signs that say “Malpaís” or “Santa Teresa”. The paved road will end in Cobano, and from there to us you will ride on a gravel road. A four wheel drive vehicle is strongly recommended.

It is about a 1 hour and 20 minute drive … you just drive in a straight line, don’t turn anywhere. Once you get to the famous “Malpaís and Santa Teresa” crossroad (you will notice our only “big” shopping center that we have) you must take a right toward Santa Teresa and drive for about 5 km (your car will mark the distances in km).

Pranamar will be on the left hand side (ocean side of course). You will see our sign. You will also know that you are getting close because after driving for about 4 km from the crossroad, you will see the ocean right next to you on the left side. There is only one stretch of about 400 meters in that road where you will literally be next to the waves. The hotel is just 200 meters past that ocean side part of the road.

We also offer private land transfers from San Jose to Santa Teresa. Our English-speaking driver will meet you at San Jose’s Juan Santamaria International Airport and will completely take care of you from the moment you set foot in Costa Rica until you set foot in your ocean front villa. Your complimentary welcome drinks await you!” (*From the Pranamar website)
